Taking lessons at a ski school from a professional instructor will allow you to correctly ski within one week.  After that time, your skills and confidence will be at a level that will enable you to safely make the most of what your chosen resort has to offer.  It is important, however, to make sure you look into any ski school’s reputation for quality, the cost of its services, and what purpose it hopes to serve, all of which can vary considerably.  At a minimum, you should look into the following. . . .

Whether they offer private ski lessons, group ski lessons, or both.  Even though private lessons are more expensive, it can be worth the expense to have your ski instructor one-on-one, particularly since you will learn faster this way.  If you like the fun of meeting new people, and wish to hear about the experiences of several others, then group lessons might be for you.  For first timers especially, class instruction seems to be the preferred choice.

Finding out the number of students are generally in a class is advisable, however.  It really depends on how a ski school manages the students, but ideally look for one that has class sizes of no more than seven or eight students.  A ski school that tries to fit many more students in a class than that is more focused on making money than providing quality ski instruction and should be avoided.

In addition to class size, the experience level the school focuses on is also important; do they cater to beginners, intermediate or expert levels, or maybe all levels?  It is important that you are assigned to the same class as others with your same skill level.  In order to assess your abilities before placing you in a class, a school might ask you to participate in an instructor-supervised test of sorts where you will be asked to ski down a couple of slopes and show them how well you are able to turn.  If you don’t know exactly where you are skill-wise, underestimate a little; if you find the class is too easy for you, you can always asked to be bumped up to the next level.

Also, do they divide classes by age or sex?  There are schools that have a ‘come-one-come-all’ policy, and those that have a narrower class focus.  In order to receive a high quality learning experience, you will want to attend a ski school that narrows its instruction focus in order to put you in a class that is age appropriate (kids or adults) and appropriate for how your gender typically learns.

Learn To Ski : Skiing Technique

How to ski downhill is the topic for this part of our learn to ski guide.

To ski, you need to learn 3 basic skills: standing up; turning; stopping.

To stand on skis, have your feet shoulder width apart with your toes pointing inwards; this creates a triangle / V shape (referred to as a ‘snow plough’).  The following three steps are next – (1) create a more stable stance by slightly bending your knees; (2) increase your balance by spreading your arms out widely; and (3) help your turning and stopping by leaning forward.

Moving forward / down is no problem as your skis will automatically do so on even the slightest slope.  To go faster, make the triangle / V shape of your skis smaller at the back (i.e. move your heels closer together) and, to slow down or stop, turn your toes more inwards and push your heels further apart.  Keep in mind, however, that these maneuvers work on smaller slopes, and to stop on a steep slope, you will need to turn gradually until your skis are not headed down the slope, but are resting horizontally across it.

To turn on skis, just point them in the direction you want to go – if that’s left, point them left, and if that’s right, well, you know.  Remember, however that mastering the art of turning on skis will take some getting used to and the right combination of timing and balance.

Pointing your skis in the direction of an intended turn may not be the only action necessary to get you there – for sharp turns, you will need to move your weight onto the foot farthest away from the direction of the turn (so for a sharp left turn, you would move your weight onto your right foot).  You will master sharp turns more quickly if you will remember to move nothing but your feet while turning, as moving body parts like your arms and shoulders is not necessary and can decrease your focus on the body part that’s actually effecting the turn.
