The two most important steps that are required to keep your swimming pool safe and healthy for your swimmers are circulation and sanitization. While proper water circulation simply requires a pool filter system, sanitization requires the use of chemicals. The two most common chemicals used to achieve this purpose are pool chlorine and bromine. While these two chemicals share certain characteristics and serve similar purposes, there are also several differences between them. Depending upon your personal preferences and situation, you may favour one over the other.
The reason why it’s so important to sanitize your swimming pool with pool chlorine or bromine is that these chemicals destroy bacteria and other harmful contaminants that may be present in the pool water. If not properly dealt with, these contaminants can reach dangerous levels and can potentially transmit illnesses and infections to swimmers. On the other hand, by following a regular maintenance routine and using the right chemicals, your swimming pool can be a very healthy and sanitary environment.
As already mentioned, pool chlorine and bromine are both used to kill bacteria and contaminants. However, each chemical works in its own way. When added to pool water, swimming pool chlorine breaks down into a variety of chemicals including hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions. These chemicals deactivate and destroy microorganisms such as bacteria by attacking their cell walls and then destroying the internal enzymes and structures of the cell. This causes the cells to become oxidized, which leaves them in a harmless state. Once the chlorine molecules have combined with the microorganisms in this way, they become inactive and can no longer continue to sanitize the water. This is why pool chlorine has to be routinely added to the water.
When swimming pool bromine is added to water, it forms hypobromous acid. Hypobromous acid is the oxidizer and sanitizer which will then react with microorganisms to deactivate them. This reaction between the hypobromous acid and the contaminants results in combined bromine or bromamines. However, unlike swimming pool chlorine, much of the pool bromine will remain active even after killing the bacteria and other contaminants. Naturally, this means that less bromine is required to keep a pool sanitized as compared to chlorine.
You never know when around or in water if danger will strike. If it does, it is imperative to know what to do to get out of it. This could literally save your life someday. Don’t take lightly how dangerous water can be, lessons are a big benefit for anyone’s safety.
Another difference between pool chlorine and bromine is the fact that chlorine is a harsher chemical than bromine and is more likely to cause skin and eye irritation. For this reason, bromine is often a good choice for pool owners who have sensitive skin. At the same time, however, it’s important to note that bromine is a chlorine-based chemical and is therefore not a chlorine-free alternative for people who suffer from chlorine allergies. Pool bromine also produces less of an odour than chlorine does, which can be an advantage for people who find the chlorine smell unpleasant and overwhelming.
If you have children, they are eventually going to want to get in water to play and swim. This is a very important reason for every parent to learn how to swim. Kids have to be protected in water, so it is your job to do that by learning how to swim yourself.
Swimming pool bugs come about because of poor pool maintenance. Don’t beat yourself up over it, however. In most cases, you’re given bad advice from pool “experts” that are really out there to get you to buy more chemicals and equipment that can be unnecessary

Paddles are often used by swimmers and triathletes in order to get faster. Are they worth it?
The answer…it depends. When brand new to swimming the most important thing is to develop swimming skills and technique. This involves developing proper mechanics through the whole stroke and a good feel for the water. At this time paddles are not beneficial. As the paddles will prevent you from truly feeling the water and developing the proper mechanics needed when swimming in a race situation.
Will a faster cadence make me faster on the bike?
In the long run the object of sprint triathlon training or even Ironman triathlon training is to go faster on the bike while still having energy for the run.
Bicycling speed is a result of your cadence (how fast the pedals are spinning) multiplied by the “gear inches” or how far your bike travels with each rotation of the pedals. If you maintain your cadence at 90 for example, and you want to go faster, you will need to use a harder gear. This requires training to teach your muscles how to push that harder gear without getting fatigued. But it is the only way to go faster once you have reached your own top cadence.
When an athlete becomes more experienced in swimming the paddles can then become useful. Stronger swimmers tend to have technique pretty figured out and gains in speed will come more from fitness. Paddles then become useful as they can develop more strength and power by using them.
When choosing a pair of paddles choose a small pair about the same size as your hand. The paddle should also should have some holes in them to help you still feel the water. Finding a pair, where one or two of your fingers are the only thing that are strapped to the paddle, are also useful.
When looking for a triathlon bicycle, consider the distances you will be competing in and correlate this with the budget you have available. I highly recommend that, if your budget is tight, you consider purchasing a used triathlon bike. They are normally well looked after and cared for and normally only for sale by an experienced triathlete who is upgrading so as to compete in longer events.
Paddles do have their place but it is important to develop good technique first. Once technique is mastered, paddles can aid one to get faster. Progress slowly to avoid any injuries. As the saying goes, go slow to go fast
